This season with the Oslo Philharmonic is about discovery. This year's programme is shaped by new impulses and significant artistic encounters, offering us an opportunity to listen with renewed interest as we explore and ask questions.

I look forward to inviting you to encounter the music being written now, and in particular our new composer-in-residence, Kristine Tjøgersen. Her imaginative musical language bridges the organic world and new orchestral soundscapes, opening up an entirely new musical world to discover.

Alongside new music, we also return to the works that have shaped us, letting them sound anew. For us, preserving tradition also means renewing the music in the performance itself. Whether we are playing music that has only just come into being, or breathing new life into the classics in the concert hall, we are sharing something alive.

It takes curiosity, and it takes an audience willing to come along on the journey. That is why we hope you will follow us this season. Whether you follow us closely, occasionally, or visit us just once, we very much look forward to playing for you.

Come and discover with us.
Be present when new sounds find their form.
Join us as we search, and as we find.

Music lives, too, in what we do not yet know.
And it begins the moment we listen.

Our concert at the Palace Square is quite simply one of the absolute highlights of the year! Performing for all of Oslo on what must be the city's most spectacular outdoor stage (in front of the Royal Palace) is an utterly electrifying experience. The programme showcases the full breadth and colour of the Oslo Philharmonic's season, with something to suit every taste! So save the date and join us! I have to admit I'm almost envious of the audience who get to experience this celebration from the auditorium (or the lawn!).

This concert features the world premieres of two new works by two of our most exciting living composers, Øyvind Torvund and Kristine Tjøgersen, and also marks Kristine Tjøgersen's very first appearance this season as the orchestra's composer-in-residence. This is one of the most thrilling things I do with the Oslo Philharmonic: bringing brand-new music to life as it makes its first journey from paper to sounding reality.

  • Øyvind Torvund  Two Pieces for Orchestra and Electronics (commission)
  • Igor Stravinskij  Le chant du rossignol
  • Kristine Tjøgersen  Wolpertinger (commission)
  • Ilan Volkov -  Conductor

If you love wind instruments, this is the concert to put in your diary. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Gran Partita is my little guilty pleasure: sheer genius combined with the warm, radiant sound of the wind players. Under the direction of Giovanni Antonini, a master of historically informed performance practice, the music shines with elegance, lightness and sparkling energy.

  • Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart  Gran Partita KV. 361
  • Joseph Martin Kraus  Olympie overture
  • Joseph Haydn  Symphony No. 104 "London"

If there is one work from our century that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime, it is György Ligeti's Violin Concerto — a piece that marks a before and after, even for us musicians. Combined with Richard Strauss's monumental and dazzlingly colourful An Alpine Symphony, this makes for what must be the perfect end to a season. I cannot recommend this programme highly enough!
