The Oslo Philharmonic held its first Christmas concerts in 1969, and they have since become a cherished tradition for many during the holiday season. The program features beloved Christmas songs performed by a full symphony orchestra, choir, and soloists, alongside classical holiday repertoire. Christian Øland conducts, and this year’s concert includes the world premiere of Hermann Vogt’s Hymn.

Paris and Vienna were Europe’s musical capitals in the 19th century, inspiring each other with elegant dance music and lively operettas. François-Xavier Roth conducts the Oslo Philharmonic in a New Year’s program that combines Strauss waltzes with French composers who refined and extended Vienna’s influence.

To celebrate the start of the new year, this program traces the musical evolution of Vienna—from late Romanticism to modernism—through three iconic composers.

Before the orchestra’s European tour with Chief Conductor Klaus Mäkelä and violin soloist Lisa Batiashvili, you can hear Klaus conduct Jean Sibelius’ four tone poems about Lemminkäinen, one of the heroes of Finnish mythology.
