Herbert Blomstedt conducts Brahms's Second and Fourth Symphonies
The 99-year-old conducting legend, the Oslo Philharmonic's Honorary Conductor Herbert Blomstedt, returns to Oslo with two of late Romanticism's most moving symphonies. Brahms called his Second Symphony one of the saddest things he had ever written, but is it really? And what do you do with a symphony that ends in desperate darkness rather than triumphant jubilation?
Herbert Blomstedt has conducted Brahms's symphonies for more than six decades. Now, at the age of 99, he returns to the Oslo Philharmonic with two of them. Blomstedt has performed these works throughout his entire life, and each time he discovers something new in them.
Brahms: Symphony No. 2
Johannes Brahms (1833–1897) considered himself a melancholic soul who constantly asked the question "Why?" He wrote that he felt as though black wings were always hovering over him.
Brahms described Symphony No. 2, composed in 1877, as one of the saddest things he had ever written. The question is whether it really is. The symphony is filled with beautiful melodies and contains passages that are both peaceful and idyllic. On the other hand, drum rolls in the timpani and sombre tones from the trombones, among other things, cast a shadow over the symphony's serene character. Ultimately, it is up to the listener to decide.
Brahms: Symphony No. 4
Symphony No. 4 is a Romantic masterpiece in which Brahms combines a complex form with a deeply emotional expression. There is much to highlight in the symphony; surprising, for instance, is its tragic ending. Unlike his other symphonies, there are no triumphant chords, no happy ending, but rather a dramatic, desperate conclusion. The symphony was premiered in 1885, conducted by Brahms himself.
