Season Finale: Truls Mørk performs Dvořák’s Cello Concerto

Truls Mørk is the soloist in Antonín Dvořák’s Cello Concerto as the Oslo Philharmonic and Chief conductor Klaus Mäkelä bring the concert season to a close. Finnish composer Magnus Lindberg made his international breakthrough as an orchestral composer with the massive work Kraft, scored for soloist ensemble, electronics, and orchestra.

As a young and unknown composer, Antonín Dvořák (1841–1904) attempted to write a cello concerto, but never completed it and lost faith in the cello as a solo instrument. Nearly 30 years later, a new cello concerto by his friend Victor Herbert restored his confidence. In 1896, Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in B minor was ready for its premiere in London, and the work would go on to become a cornerstone of the cello repertoire.

Finnish composer and pianist Magnus Lindberg (b. 1958) gained international recognition with Kraft (1985), a massive and forceful symphonic work in two parts for solo ensemble, electronics, and orchestra. Lindberg was awarded the Nordic Council Music Prize for the piece, which remains a milestone in contemporary orchestral music.
