America's open landscape

Ryan Bancroft conducts a wide range of American music by Alberto Ginastera, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, and John Adams. American Randall Goosby is the soloist in Korngold's Violin Concerto, which builds on film music from the golden age of Hollywood.

Alberto Ginastera (1916-1983) was one of the 20th century's most central Argentinian composers. Danza final - Malambo, is from the ballet Estancia from 1941, which builds on a famous poem from the 1870s - The Gaucho Martín Fierro av José Hernández. The gaucho was the Argentinian counterpart to the American cowboy - a mythic and admired figure who lived on the vast pampas. The malambo dance is associated with the gauchos, and Ginasteras malambo is a powerful tribute to the folk Argentinian cultural heritage.

Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1897-1957) was the great wonder kind in Vienna in the early 20th century and would later take the step to become a successful opera composer. He left his home country in the 1930s during the advance of the Nazis. He moved to Hollywood and was welcomed with open arms: He set the gold standard for film music in a golden era, won two Oscars, and became an American citizen. After the Second World War, Korngold mostly wrote music for the concert hall, and in his Violin Concerto from 1945 he uses his own music from four films.

American John Adams (b. 1947) wrote Harmonium for choir and orchestra in a tiny office in San Francisco, but in the music, he created a powerful architecture with large, open spaces. Adams took the music of minimalist pioneers Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley as his starting point and developed it in his own direction. The three movements - Negative Love, Because I could not stop for Death, and Wild Nights - build on poems by John Donne (1572-1631) and Emily Dickinson (1830-1886).

Dalia Stasevska, who was originally supposed to conduct the concert, has canceled. Ryan Bancroft, who was supposed to replace her, has become ill. Chief Conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Ryan Wigglesworth, conducts the concert in his place.
