Crescendo Prokofiev Mørk Petrenko

Sergei Prokofiev (1891−1953) wrote his fifth symphony in one month during the summer of 1944, and referred to it as the culmination of a long period of his creative life. To perform it, Oslo Philharmonic appears on stage with project orchestra Young Philharmonic, and the united orchestra is conducted by our chief conductor Vasily Petrenko.

− Symphony number 5 is Prokofiev’s masterpiece and one of the greatest symphonies ever written, says Petrenko.

− It has an enormous energy and playing it at a young age is an unbelievable experience!

Antonín Dvorák wrote his cello concerto in B minor during a stay in New York, where he was the director of the national conservatory. The concerto received its premiere in London in 1896. Since then, it has become one of the most popular works for cello. The Oslo Philharmonic has recorded it with this week’s soloist Truls Mørk, one of the great cellists of our time.

The concert begins with a commisioned work by the young Norwegian composer Michael Grolid (born 1997).

Young Philharmonic is a part of a national talent program "Crescendo", a collaboration between Barratt Due Institute of Music, Bergen International Festival and Oslo Philharmonic. Valdres Summer Symphony is also a partner for Young Philharmonic in 2016.
