Five instruments, four mythical creatures. In Isang Yun's Images, the tortoise, dragon, phoenix and tiger merge in ever-shifting timbres, while Arthur Bliss's Conversations lets the instruments converse with one another in a humorous fashion. This chamber concert is framed by two quintets by Johann Christian Bach.
Welcome to a chamber programme united by a distinctive thread of associations to both the verbal and the visual. While Isang Yun's work opens up a deep, philosophical sound world, Arthur Bliss entertains with musical conversation. The works are framed by the galant and highly expressive music of Bach's son.
Common to all the works is their exploration of new forms of musical expression within their genre: Bach through the affects of the music, Bliss through a humorous musical programme, and Yun through his ability to paint pictures with sound.
