Eldbjørg Hemsing performs Max Richter's reimagining of The Four Seasons
What happens when one of history's most performed works is taken apart and reassembled by one of the most streamed living composers? Max Richter has done precisely that with Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, and when Baroque virtuosity meets the hypnotic drive of minimalism, something entirely new emerges. With Eldbjørg Hemsing as soloist, past and present merge in a musical journey that breathes new life into Vivaldi's most famous work.
Max Richter: Seasons Recomposed
Vivaldi's The Four Seasons is one of the most well-known classical works of all time and is used in films, commercials, and much more. Few people don't recognise the opening of "Spring". In Seasons Recomposed, the German composer Max Richter (b. 1966) has taken Vivaldi's work apart and recomposed it, much like a literary retelling.
This was a common practice in Vivaldi's own time, so one can imagine it is something Vivaldi himself would have appreciated. Little of Seasons Recomposed resembles the original. The music Richter does borrow from Vivaldi is looped and distorted to fit within his characteristically minimalist style.
