The Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra visits the Oslo Concert Hall featuring music by Jean Sibelius and Gustav Mahler.

There is something strange about Jean Sibelius's (1865-1957) music that you cannot find anywhere else. A sensitivity to the innermost nuances. Listen to the opening notes of the violin concerto or the stratospheric flageolets in the finale. Sibelius opens the door to unknown worlds, bright spaces and endless horizons. With a masterful orchestral treatment where wistful strings meet bitter woodwinds. And it is soloist Valery Sokolov who holds the key to these enchanting worlds.

In Gustav Mahler's (1860-1911) fifth symphony, one encounters a completely different outlook on life, which is exuberant and neurotic. From the crazy trumpet of the funeral march in the opening to storms and dancing joy. And the famous adagietto that goes dangerously close to the precipice of sentimentality. 70 minutes of everything for those who can't get enough.

Finnish Santtu-Matias Rouvali has been the chief conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra since 2017 and he will lead the orchestra’s guest performance at the Oslo Concert Hall.

The Ukrainian violinist Valeriy Sokolov is the soloist in Sibelius’s Violin Concerto.
