Semyon Bychkov, one of the most prominent conductors of our time, conducts music by Bryce Dessner and Modest Mussorgsky.
Bryce Dessner's (b. 1976) orchestral work Mari is dedicated to Semyon Bychkov, who conducted the premiere in 2021. During the pandemic, Dessner drew inspiration from the forests of the French Basque Country. Mari is the name of the Basque forest goddess.
It was a hard blow for Modest Musorgsky (1839–1881) when Viktor Hartmann, a close friend and versatile artist, died suddenly in the summer of 1873. The following year, a large exhibition was arranged in St. Petersburg with Hartmann's art. Modest Musorgsky wrote the piano cycle Pictures at an exhibition in excitement after the exhibition, and the movements are named after individual pictures. Maurice Ravel orchestrated Musorgsky's music in 1922.
Semyon Bychkov is the Chief Conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, and one of the most celebrated conductors today. He has recorded a number of albums with the Berlin Philharmonic and Concertgebouw orchestras, among others. This is his first visit in Oslo since 2010.
The concert replaces the Mahler concert which was originally scheduled on this date, and which has now been cancelled. A limited number of tickets will be put up for sale on Sunday 23rd January.
