Tan Dun: Tradition and innovation
One of the world’s most acclaimed composers in collaboration with Norwegian violinist Eldbjørg Hemsing.
The Chinese composer Tan Dun became widely known after winning both an Oscar and a Grammy for his original music for Ang Lee’s film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The journey from his boyhood in Hunan province during the Cultural Revolution to becoming one of the world’s most acclaimed composers is a fascinating story of tradition, renewal and creative potential.
Tan Dun’s works are often multimedial, and often combine traditional Chinese culture and instruments while spanning a wide area from opera and chamber music to film and installations. As a conductor, he has guested with orchestras such as Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, to name a few.
Eldbjørg Hemsing has a background in Norwegian folk music and appears as a soloist with symphony orchestras worldwide. She has collaborated with Tan Dun on several occasions, and this new work for violin is written for her.
This concert is arranged in collaboration with the Ultima Festival.
