Young people compose for and perform with the orchestra

This is a day for young people in the Oslo Philharmonic: first the orchestra will play music composed by high school students, followed by a concert with Nordstrand Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Who will write the symphonic masterpieces of the future? That´s impossible to predict, but no matter who it turns out to be, we believe it would be very valuable for them to test out their ideas early on with a full orchestra at their disposal. The idea behind ung.kom is to give young, talented music-makers the opportunity to write for orchestra, listen to how it sounds, and let others experience the result.

The five pieces the audience will hear at the concert are the results of a long process where the students have been taught composition and have received guidance from a composer. They have been able to try out their music during so-called sinfonietta rehearsals, where a musician from each instrument group plays through the music. It sounds completely different from when using digital composition software!

The musicians are also available to make valuable comments about to what extent the music is well-arranged for each instrument. This increases the chances of the work sounding good when it eventually reaches the concert hall. Each of the five participating schools choose one of the pieces for the concert, and these five pieces make up the first part of the programme.

Ung.play is a collaborative project where the Oslo Philharmonic invites a youth orchestra to rehearse and perform a concert programme together with the orchestra. This year the challenge is taken up by Nordstrand Youth Symphony Orchestra, and together with experienced musicians they arguably form the spring season´s largest symphony orchestra in Oslo.

Ung.kom is a partnership between the Norwegian Society of Composers, five high schools and the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra.

The project receives support from the Arts Council Norway, and entry is free. The conductor for this concert is Lars-Erik ter Jung.
