Family concert: Philharmonic motion

The Oslo Philharmonic's Family Day is the best occasion of the year to let the kids get close to the music. They will have the opportunity to try their hand at conducting, composing and instrument-making before the concert itself.

This season's Family Day is in its third year, and the aim remains the same: that children not only experience classical music as listeners from a distance, but have a close experience with both the music itself and the musicians who play it. We hope that allowing them to participate and getting to know the instruments and the performers will later minimise their perception of the distance between the concert hall and stage.

The activities in the lobby and in the cafe in ”Glasshuset” start two hours before the concert. Here the children will be able to try conducting a string quartet, compose music and have it performed, or try to play different instruments with help from the musicians of the Oslo Philharmonic. There will also be an instrument workshop where they can make a miniature violin under the guidance of violin maker Jacob von der Lippe.

Music and movement is this year´s theme, and the dancer and choreographer Kyrre Texnæs will present the concert from the stage. He has choreographed a dance especially for the occasion, which both children and adults can learn at one of the stations in the lobby before the concert. At the end of the concert the children will be invited to dance with the choreographer and the orchestra to Arture Márquez´ catchy Danzón No. 2.

The other works on the programme are also about movement in many ways: in Haydn´s Symphony No. 101, entitled The Clock, time keeps ticking on and on. In Vaughn-Williams The Lark Ascending the violin soloist plays the role of a playful lark. And it´s obvious who is moving about in the famous Flight of the Bumblebee by Rimsky-Korsakov …

The concert will be conducted by Per Kristian Skalstad. It is aimed at children between the ages of 4 and 12, but everyone is welcome!
