About the position

The Oslo Philharmonic and chief conductor Klaus Mäkelä invite highly qualified candidates to express their interest in the position of principal timpanist.

The principal timpanist shares the role with the co-principal timpanist, the latter also has percussion duty. The successful candidate needs to be a strong leader as well as a solid team player.

We are looking for a dedicated orchestral musician who would like to invest in and take an active part in our orchestra's inner life and its continued artistic development.

Process

We invite qualified candidates to express their interest by applying with a video audition (details below).

This vacancy does not yet have a specified audition date. We are tentatively planning an audition in early 2024. However, our goal in this process is to get to know our candidates well, preferably by appearing as guests in the orchestra, before deciding who to invite to audition.

We will review applications on an ongoing basis with the intention of inviting promising candidates to guest work before the audition. For practical reasons, seriously interested candidates should therefore have their applications in before the end of August.

Candidates that are invited for guest work should be prepared to play a short live pre-audition while they are here. The live pre-audition will consist of the same repertoire as the video audition. In addition, the jury may ask individual candidates to prepare other material they feel is needed to provide a more complete picture of the candidate as a musician.
